Director Alaiasa schools the kids in 4-square

Hi all,
School's going well. I know you're wondering. We're adjusting to each other, which isn't always a picnic, but overall things are great. Kids are happy, teachers are happy, parents are happy. And we're all learning a lot!
A favorite so far: journal writing. My class of 5-6 graders (+one 7th grader) write everyday and I get to read their stories, ideas, and babbling adding my comments here and there. But the pages that are folded over are private, and I wouldn't even think about reading those ones.
I'm impressed with what I read, we have some creative talent in our class. Adventure series about ninjas vs. samurai, a teenage detective squad, and a confession about all the candy a boy would buy if he had $1 million. But he'd save some money to fix his cavities. That's foresight.
Being a teacher is more than time-consuming. Life-consuming. But I'm happy when Ella comes home from school telling us about paleontologists, houses built from old shipping containers, and Samoan songs. Isaac makes adorable things in kindergarten, and Owen has volunteers to hold him all day until he falls asleep on his little sleeping bag.
But if I don't write frequently, I hope you'll excuse me.

Melinda you are downright inspiring. What a fabulous way to make use of your time (and time you don't have)
I want to come to your school.
Seriously. You actually read what they write every day? That's a full time job in itself. I LOVE that you can bring your baby. Can I come work there?
How amazing! I absoluely love teaching the 5th-7th grade age! I only got one year of teaching Junior High math (mostly 7th graders) in before I had kids, but I loved it so much that I;'m keeping up my teaching license and I plan on going back to those 6th and 7th graders some day when the time is right. I can only imagine the adventures you are having in this! Enjoy!
Oh, and my ONE little year of teaching was totally life-consuming. I can definitely relate, and I only taught 2 subjects, not EVERYTHING! And I didn't have kids yet, just a husband in school, so it was OK for my life to be consumed! Good luck in the balancing act!
damaris, i'm not that inspiring. you do amazing things that blow my mind.
mariko, i can't even tell you how much i want you to come to our school. did you know iwa leger? she taught math at kahuku, took robbie classroom. she's here teaching and we're so happy to have her! slight problem, we aren't even getting paid a salary let alone health insurance. we just rely on the local health clinic and pay $10 a visit.
monette, these kids are the best age, mature enough to listen but innocent enough to be sweet. i'm sure you'd have some great ideas to help me with math. any tips on teaching rounding?
