Umu Turkey and Chocolate Haupia Pie

What a great Thanksgiving! We joined the Peter's family for feasting and fun with friends.

In the morning Ella and Ephraim made 8 dozen rolls.
Then we went to the Peter's house to help with preparations. The umu was already cooking. An umu is an outdoor oven made by heating up rocks, then piling food on them, and covering it all with banana leaves. In two or three hours, we cooked 3 turkeys, a ham, dozens of ulu, taro, loaves of bread, and who know what else was in there!

Then the boys get to burn off their fingertips getting it all out.

The finished product. Mmmm.

We did have all the traditional fixings: gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, jello salad, green bean casserole, homemade cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. (Isn't Sister Peters awesome?!) But then we also had palusami, ulu, kalo, pisupo, and Tahitian coconut bread, topped off with chocolate haupia pie and Samu ice cream. Oh how thankful we are to live in Samoa!

That outdoor oven sounds pretty cool. Glad you guys had a good thanksgiving!
I'm tagging you. Here is what you do:
Here are the rules:1. The player lists 6 facts/habits about themselves - try to find 6 you haven't already posted about. 2. At the end of the post, the player tags 6 people and posts their names, and then goes to their blog and leaves them a comment, letting them know they have been tagged and asking them to read your blog for the rules.

I love imu turkey. Samoans call it "umu"?
We'll definitely be visiting next summer it looks like, since someone made an offer on my house. I'm still sick about it.

How fun! Thanks for the great pics! Your Thanksgiving this year was the same as ours was last year. It was so much fun, and Christine is just amazing. I'm so glad that you had a good time! Love Jessi

Yeah, the Samoans call it umu. They also do it in a pile above ground instead of digging a pit and burying it all like Hawaiians. I wonder if it makes any difference? Still amazing.
