December 18, after the hike, we drove south to Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand. We have some friends there who sort of came to NZ on holiday and never left. I guess the grass really is greener here.Staying with friends=good idea. Down time and chillaxin'. Friday we didn't leave the house until after lunch. We went to the awesome national museum (it's free!) called Te Papa.
The kids led us around oohing and ahhing. We saw a real but dead giant squid, a traditional Maori "whare" (like Samoan "fale" - meetinghouse), computer wall, giant floor tile map of NZ, and other way cool stuff. We weren't too keen on the authentic earthquake demonstration where you go in a house and it starts rattling. Still too fresh. But all else was awesome.

The only Kiwis we saw.

With this exhibit you take your picture on a computer then project it and manipulate it on a large wall using a wand. Magic.

And even in residential areas, you can see surfers, sheep, wilderness, and hear cows.

You guys should have stopped and seen "Rainbow Springs" in Rotorua. They have live Kiwis there!
I think your kids would have loved the Agrodome as well. The main show is real fun.
You could have kicked back at the spa... ;)
