So I go to KS Mart the other day (no, not Kmart, don't be confused). My cart is LOADED with kids and groceries. I get up to the checkout and I notice that the lady scans the groceries, sets them aside, and doesn't bag them. Something is different. Then she says, "No more plastic bags. Get a box." Hmmm. So I grab two big boxes from the "box bin" and pile my groceries in them.
And I was so happy!
I'd heard about the bag ban and sort of doubted anyone would take it seriously. Like the solar panels that are supposed to be installed in government offices, or the hybrid government cars we have yet to see to replace the Nissan Armadas and Toyota Tundras driving around "on department business". Riiiight.
I'm very pleased. I've always liked bringing my own bags to shop with, but I never carry enough with me. So I'll have to stock up. This box idea is pretty good.
The stores are really doing it! Yay for us! I hope it makes a big difference on our island.

very cool.
does your school have a website?
That is very cool Melinda. I guess this is a first step.
ahhhh.. Good ole ks mart
That's awesome. Most ecological issues make even more obvious sense on an island, because really, where are you going to put all of the trash. We've had a worm bin again this year and really like it, and try to take our own bags to the store.
love this! wish the U.S. would get on board-- i know a lot of places in europe do this as well, and of course we are BEHIND in the green scene! :(
For your trash cans:
You can put a piece of paper at the bottom of the can. It doesn't protect the sides from getting nasty, but you won't have to scrape gum off the bottom of the can. (Remember garbage night at our house and the trash cans that didn't have liners? Yuck.) No, we don't do that here; I've seen it at some hotels.
"Shop smart...Shop, KSmart." lol, couldn't resist. I know at least eph will get the reference.
