Thursday we had a big storm. Around bedtime there was a crash of thunder so loud it sounded like two trucks had collided on our roof. Soon after that our internet didn't work. Friday we called the American Samoa Telecommunications Authority (ASTCA) to figure out what to do. The diagnostics showed the modem was fried. So Ephraim went and bought a new one that day.
The next day, Saturday morning we were excited to watch General Conference online (since taking all the kids to the church at 5 a.m. has not worked well for us in the past), and found to our dismay that not only did the internet not work, but we had no dial tone on the landline. And ASTCA closes on weekends. Arg.
So, we've waited patiently and today, Tuesday the guys came and restored communication. Thanks guys!
In the meantime, I've been thinking. Things break. Owen took my cellphone in the shower--broke. (My cellphone doesn't even get reception at my house anyway.) Owen pulled off a little cable inside our printer--kaput. At our school, the computer died (my guess is it's humidity-related), and the printer/copier is constantly out of ink with none to be found on island. I've just learned not to rely on these things.
And I'm trying to be grateful for what we have. Yesterday I was getting in the shower thinking sincerely, "Thank goodness we have running water!" Even if it's not drinkable. And our electricity is working, so I'm never without a fan; big relief.
Maybe we don't have a "normal" American life. But after catching up on my National Geographic reading, I'm realizing there are many more dire situations to be concerned about. Most of the world deals with issues beyond my scope.
So I'm not griping. I'm just mentioning. Things break. But we get along. (And don't bother praising my good attitude, usually I'm the biggest whiner about these things. Ask Ephraim.)

(This picture has nothing to do with the post. We just had a family photo shoot Sunday and I wanted to share.)

how CUTE are you guys? i'm not griping-- just mentioning! i still can't get over seeing pictures of ephraim clean shaven and with short hair. . . you know my fondest memories of him were when he was fully "in bloom"!
Oh man.
You can't be a teacher without INK!
Seriously. Tell me what kind of ink you need and I'll SEND IT TO YOU.
Seriously. Did I say that already?
thanks mariko, i'll find out what kind and may take you up on that. btw, ephraim's coming up there on the 26th this month. maybe he can bring some down for us. i'm jealous he gets to meet mozely first.
meredith, this picture was strategically timed post- haircut and shave.
Seeing you with your family just made me realize that the last time I saw you was when you were engaged! (I think I was too but it is kind of fuzzy).
You can't really complain anyway with that beautiful sunset behind your family. I think my family could use a beach location soon. Perhaps I'll get my way and eventually move to California. (No offense to Am. Samoa but they have ink at all the stores in Cali)!
Okay, so I totally just had to search your archives and figure out when I missed the announcement that you were expecting. You waited until 7 months to blog about it?! Bad form, my friend, bad form. (but really, I'm just giving you a hard time)
Congratulations!!! I'm so happy for you guys. I know you don't want me to praise you, but even if you whine most of the time, you deal with so much while we are so pampered. So any attempt at a good attitude deserves high praise. Let me know if there's some little comfort I can send to you from the mainland!! Do you have all you need for your pregnancy/baby? Girl or boy?
Yay, Owen didn't make a stinky face in these pics! So cute with his arms raised. You are all beautiful and I miss you to pieces! Now we are super far away and won't get to see Eph on the 26th like we would've if we were still in HI.
I know what you mean about things breaking. I'm so afraid to buy anything nice or wear anything nice with these two kids around destroying everything in sight! Sorry you didn't get to watch conference at home. Did you get to watch it at the stake center?
I love your blog!
