School Girl

We are the parents of a school child! Ella started K4 at Manumalo Baptist School yesterday, and we're so proud!

Remember how she wasn't so keen on school, and I thought we'd have to do some creative parenting to convince her? Well, she sort of just warmed up to the idea on her own. And when we started getting her new pencils, glue, crayons, new shoes, and her nifty uniform, she felt ready to go.

Tuesday morning when I dropped her off at her class, she introduced herself to the teacher, put her backpack on the shelf, and kissed me goodbye. I wasn't really ready to leave her, I wished I could stay and watch all day. But she didn't really want me around. So Isaac and I carried on our day without cute Ella-roo.

I picked her up at twelve and got a whole report on the day. She cried because they couldn't play on the playground (it was rainy), but other than that she enjoyed eating sgabetti and bread in the cafeteria for lunch and learning some new songs in her class. Because it's a Baptist school they learn songs like "He is great and I'm so small, Jesus holds me lest I fall." It's really cute when she sings it. The classes are conducted in English, but Samoan is spoken all around her, so maybe she'll pick some up...

I feel a little old taking my child to school, but mostly I feel glad that she's doing something productive and different for 4 hours a day. And glad that Isaac and I can go shopping, nap, do puzzles, or whatever we feel like one on one.

That is so awesome. I love the uniform. Some of our best neighbors are evangelical. Their kids are as guileless as ours. Now we have some Muslim neighbors too. They are having a Ramadan break the fast party as we speak and Miriam is having trouble going to sleep on account of it. Miriam was skeptical of school in America too, but she loves it so far. In 23rd grade, or whereever I'm at now, you forget that school was really a lot of fun. I like it now too, but the newness has kind of worn off.

I love Ella's smile. She seems really happy. I'm glad she likes school. Enzo starts pre school 2 days a week when we get back. I hope he likes it. We'll see.
